This blog post was written standing up, without AI assistance — human-native!

AI

Since GPT-4 arrived, I can easily switch between database kernel engineer, test engineer, and documentation engineer roles. It’s like gaining superpowers. I’ve also started helping people around me make better use of AI. I really hope to build something meaningful with open-source LLMs in 2024.

Code

In 2023, I continued contributing heavily to Databend. Although I wrote less code compared to 2022, this year’s work was more practical. Every time I code, I feel an incredible sense of warmth and purpose. It makes me love the profession of “programmer” more and more: with just a laptop, you can change the world.

Fitness

In 2023, skateboarding became my primary way of staying fit. Each hour-long high-intensity session leaves me drenched in sweat, which feels amazing. I can now pull off some advanced tricks that look pretty cool. Of course, there were some accidents along the way: a broken finger, a shin hitting the wall. But I’ve recovered, and my passion for this challenging and adventurous sport remains strong.

Changes

One major change in 2023: I switched from Ubuntu (which I’d used for over a decade) to MacOS. My setup is now much lighter. Just a MacBook, and I can work anywhere. I said goodbye to external monitors and mechanical keyboards for good.

Databend

In 2023, all my energy still revolved around Databend. I’m committed to making Databend truly embody the “Bring Compute to Data” philosophy and deliver greater value to users. This lays a solid foundation for achieving even bigger goals in 2024.

2024

I predict that the big data field will undergo some structural transformations in 2024, evolving into richer application scenarios. I hope Databend plays a key role in this process, continues leading the industry, and contributes to making the world a better place.
